FAQ: Midwives??

Is homebirth legal in Hawaii? Yes! In Hawaii licensed midwives can provide a full range of care including ordering labs and ultrasounds, access to medications and IV fluids, pregnancy, postpartum and well person care. Pale Keiki and other Hawaiian cultural practitioners provide traditional and customary practices under their rights as Hawaiian citizens, as protected by the “state” of Hawaii constitution.
Our practice also collaborates with a variety of local providers for complimentary care and consultation.

Does having a midwife help reduce the risk of racial disparities in maternal mortality and morbidity? Research says yes! Multiple studies have demonstrated that care from trained midwives improves outcomes for families of color. For the full statement from ACNM, Black Mamas Matter Alliance, & International Confederation of Midwives, clickhere.

Is it safe? Again, research says yes. Studies repeatedly show that midwives provide care that is sometimes SAFER than being in the hospital. Our team carries emergency medications and equipment and regularly practices safety drills. See our safety page for more information about the safety of midwifery care and homebirth.

Isn’t it messy? Yes and No. It can be, but we provide you with alot of supplies and plans to help contain the mess, and then, after we tuck you into bed with your newborn, we clean up :)

Can I use my insurance? Probably not, but maybe? Sometimes insurance companies will reimburse for services after care. We can provide you with coded receipts and copies of your paid invoice. HSA and Flex spending accounts can be used.

Is there financial assistance? YUP. We want this to be for everyone, not just the elite. We offer a sliding scale and payment plans as well as a discount for Hawaiian families. We also work with Kalauokekahuli and Pacific Birth Collective stipend programs.
